60's Vintage Raymond of London long velvet cape
Buyer's Note
Raymond of London was a brand that existed in the 1960s, manufacturing capes and coats using high-quality British wool and velvet.
The buyer remembers being thrilled to find this, as they had fallen in love with the brand's capes at first sight in the high-end vintage and antique section of London's historic department store, Liberty.
An opera cape or evening cape worn by upper-class European women for evening outings or attending the opera.
Made with heavy velvet reminiscent of a stage curtain, it evokes the image of the legendary soprano, Maria Callas.
It fastens at the front with a jewelry-like concho around the neck.
The most distinctive feature is the hood, which is much larger than the face, and it exudes a romantic, Gothic mood. However, these hooded capes are derived from nun's habits and were designed so as not to interfere with the hat or hairstyle worn underneath.
The heroine also wears a similar cape in the film and stage adaptations of Gaston Leroux's "The Phantom of the Opera." It brings to mind the Paris Opera House, the Palais Garnier, in the early 20th century.
